About Glass Pearls and Real Pearls
Glass pearls, also known as “simulated pearls” are manmade glass beads which look like real pearls. They are much much better quality than the plastic type, which usually peel or discolour on the outside layer. Glass pearl necklaces were really popular in the 1930s to early 1960s. Companies like Rosita – tagline “Pearl Charm” – made exquisite realistic pearl necklaces affordable to those who could not afford real pearls. A Rosita necklace would have been sold with a shell-shaped box, and a certificate of authentication with serial number, price and date of purchase. The price of a small double-strand pearl necklace from Rosita back in the 1930s would have set you back around £5; that’s the equivalent of around £300 today!
Helpful hint about caring for pearls and glass pearls: You should never spray perfume on real pearls, or indeed glass pearls. Doing so may tarnish the outside and cause corrosion.
