A Brief History of the Charm Bracelet
One particular style of bracelet that remains a firm favourite among collectors is the charm bracelet.
The wearing of charms has been around since as long ago as 400 to 600BC; this probably began as a form of amulet or talisman to ward off evil spirits or bad luck.Charms also served to identify an individual to the gods in the afterlife.
Early jewellery charms or amulets would have been made from animal-bones, clay and shells. Later on, charms were made out of rocks, gems and wood. [Source]
In more recent history, Queen Victoria, who ruled from 1876 to 1901, loved jewellery and frequently wore charm bracelets. In fact, she is often credited with bringing the charm bracelet back into fashion, especially among the wealthy elite class of Europe. Queen Victoria also loved to give charm bracelets as gifts, and took care to personalise the charms to fit the likes of the recipient!
This century saw a rise in popularity again of the charm bracelet in the 1950s and 60s. Teenagers loved to collect charms to mark achievements, milestones, mementos and hobbies. Many famous people helped this trend take flight, including movie star Elizabeth Taylor who often wore her own charm bracelet.
The most recent resurgence of the charm bracelet happened in the 1990s where they took the form of ‘link bracelets’. These were similar to charm bracelets in idea, allowing teens to choose styles which suited their hobbies and interests.etc
