Handcrafted Vintage Bohemian Necklace
A beautiful vintage bohemian necklace. This gorgeous vintage necklace is made from metal decorated with a hand carved pattern containing flowers and fish. The necklace features nine hanging drop details, each with a vintage coin and three smaller droplets. The hanging metal pieces make a lovely jingling sound when they move.
This necklace fastens with larger hook and loop, and is in excellent condition overall although it is missing one of the small droplets on the fourth section of drop details and the drop details are not all perfect in shape. A lovely piece dating to between 1945 & 1970 – with the original coins dated 1945 – this is one unique bohemian necklace!
Actual measurements:
Length (fastener to bottom of hanging details) – 23.4cm
Diameter (excluding hanging details)- 14.1cm
Width (widest part excluding hanging details) – 2.4cm
Coin Diameter – 1.9cm
Further information
I believe this item originates from South Asia. It is difficult to date an item like this as it could have been made for a celebration, such as a wedding, in or around 1945 – the date clearly shown on the coins – or it could have been made as a tourist item, likely in the seventies. Either way, this is a lovely item with a lovely story!
A little about the coins: There are two different coins used. The fist reads, “1/4 RUPEE INDIA – 1945 – GEORGE VI KING EMPEROR”. The second coin reads, “10 CENT. …(unclear)… REPUBLIC FRANCAISE”.
The same 10 cent coins in good condition sell for around £10 each online and date to around 1923/1937. The 1/4 rupee coins in good condition sell for around £3 – £5 on average. Both coins contain an amount of silver though of course they have no hallmarks.
